Multiple World Champions at Adv.TM meeting Thurs.9/25 at Ridgefield (CT) Library, 7:30pm

Attention Advanced Toastmasters !

When you read the headline above, I'm sure you said to yourself, "There must be a catch. Multiple World Champions don't just show up at a Toastmasters club's meeting."

There WILL be World Champions of Public Speaking at the meeting this Thursday ....

.... on DVD.

Now, before you dismiss this opportunity, let me tell you what we are going to do . . .

As a club, we will be watching the winning speeches by multiple world champions of public speaking and evaluating them using the methods we use for our own Advanced members.

Do you think that the world champions did nothing wrong and that was how they became champions? Not necessarily. Do you think they did some things EXTREMELY well and that helped them to become world champions? Probably. In either case, their performances have something to teach us !

FREE SAMPLE !!! Click here to see a small sample of Ed Tate, World Champion of Public Speaking. What do you think he did well? What could he have done better?

Join us on Thursday, 9/25 at DiversityUSA Advanced Toastmasters in the "History Room" at the Ridgefield Public Library starting at 7:30pm. Guests are welcome !

Ridgefield library is located at 472 Main Street, Ridgefield, CT 06877
click here for a map showing the location. Directions are available on the library's web site: http://www.biblio.org/rdgfldpages/direct.htmÂ

Please pass this invitation along to any Toastmaster who has achieved their CC or Advanced Communicator awards. We would love to have them attend a meeting and learn about opportunities for growth through DiversityUSA Advanced Toastmasters Club.

Brutally Honest and Caring Evaluations

As the Evaluation Contests progress from the club level to the area level all around Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts, I am reminded of the real reason for giving evaluations... to learn new ideas that you can use in future speeches and improve you speaking skills!

Darren LaCroix, 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking, gave me an interesting idea in his recent newsletter that could apply to the upcoming evaluation contests and anyone who wants to give (and get) excellent evaluations that help you improve.

Brutal, Honest . . . Caring?
by Darren LaCroix

How do you know if people truly care about you? Seriously? Is it when they're nice to you? How do you feel when someone tells says, "You've got something in your teeth." Do you want to know?

... At our last coaching camp, one of the attendees told me they'd heard I was "mean" when giving feedback. Really? At first I got defensive. Then it dawned on me that I'm no different. Receiving feedback is different from each individual. Different people will take the same exact feedback in a different
way. What is the "purpose" of the feedback? To show that you're better? Or to help grow?

... Some presenters are surrounded by people who can't give them a higher level of feedback. They're the "king" of their club, and they may be content with that. This is probably pretty good for their self-esteem, but it's not good for their growth. What kind of people are you surrounded by? Are they helping you grow?

.... How do you look at feedback from people who have more expertise than you?

... No mentor ever "niced" me to the next level.
Darren brings up a good point... growth comes from feedback... but the one part he does not touch on is that it is equally important to present the feedback in a manner that will be accepted.
Here are some ideas you might want to consider the next time you give an evaluation ...

- A lot of people use the "Sandwich Technique" (a constructive criticism with a compliment on either side) but I've often seen evaluators who are overly harsh with their "constructive criticism" and insincere with the compliments. This effectively defeats the whole idea of the Sandwich Technique.

- The "Simple Suggestion Technique" is another idea where you simply phrase your "constructive criticisms" as suggestions or ideas that you (the evaluator) might have tried. This takes the emphasis off of doing something WRONG (which is harsh and raises the speaker's defenses) and puts the emphasis on trying something DIFFERENT.

- Another way is the "Clean Slate Approach" where you start with "Here are some suggestions for your next speech... " This helps take the focus off of what went wrong in this speech and puts it on the next speech (which is a clean slate). The speaker will be less defensive about his or her next speech and may actually use your suggestions (which is really the mark of an effective evaluation).

- The "Challenge Approach" works with some speakers, but not with all. It can be started "With everything you did right, the one thing that would take your speaking to the next level is ..." This statement should grab the speaker's attention and may even motivate them to see if they can really "take their speech to the next level" !

- The "Perception Approach" starts out with "My perception of your speech is that ...." This is especially good when you want to address the speaker's theme or overall goal for the speech. If the speaker did not clearly get his or her key points, this will be an important skill for them to develop and will show incredible improvements in future speechs (if they are given a good evaluation and they take it to heart).

These "lead-in's" can help you present the feedback ... without turning off the speaker. There are also variations on these as part of the Toastmasters Module, "Evaluate to Motivate" which is a great [pre-written] speech that anyone can edit (to "make it your own") and give to your club.

What about the Speaker?
Of course, as Darren points out, it is still the speaker's responsibility to be open to the suggestions (that's all they really are) and incorporate what makes sense.

Evaluations can be emotionally charged and it is important to do them well so that the speaker improves and the audience can learn from the evaluation as well.

Contests too !
How was your club's Evaluation contest? Be sure to attend your Area and Division contests to see some excellent evaluations and, of course, you will want to attend the District 53 Fall Conference on October 10th & 11th to see the winners compete for the top prize for evaluations !

Advanced Evaluations:
If you already have your CC and want an even higher level of evaluation for your speeches, you might want to consider joining one of the Advanced Clubs in District 53...

Advanced Toastmasters mtg. Thurs.3/27 at Ridgefield (CT) Library

Greetings Advanced Toastmasters & guests!

This note is a reminder from the Toastmaster for the upcoming meeting, Paul Tanner (in case you need time to prepare a presentation). The meeting is on Thursday evening, March 27.

As this club has flexibility, the presentation can be a:

o manual speech

o presentation at work to colleagues, customer, or prospect

o any other public speaking presentation you would like to practice

According to The Seven Strategies of Master Presenters by Dr. Brad McRae and David Brooks (page 206):

Most presenters overprepare on content and underprepare on delivery. To counteract this natural tendency, … (use these) five principles for effective rehearsals:

1. Test early, test often

2. Simulate the setting and audience as closely as possible

3. Conduct dry runs

4. Test on mixed audiences

5. Look at the presentation from a fresh perspective

Please let me know whether you would like to present and receive objective feedback.

Also, let me know if you are interested in conducting a table topics session. It too can be flexible and creative, with a more workshop style focusing on speaking technique, or traditional.

Other key roles will be assigned at the meeting.

Thank you,

Paul Tanner

Invitation to Adv. TM meeting at Ridgefield Library on Thurs.8/23

Greetings Advanced Toastmasters !

On the 4th Thursday of last month, (July 26th), we had a very productive meeting of the Division A Advanced Toastmasters club in Ridgefield, CT. At the meeting, we decided, as a group, to come to the next meeting (this Thursday, Aug.23rd ) prepared for a number activities that will improve our Toastmaster skills.

If we are going to grow as members of an advanced club, we need to challenge ourselves to improve and "raise the bar" for our communication and leadership skills. In particular, our plan is that each member of the advanced Toastmaster will come to the meeting with...

1) At least one "tip" for the group. This can relate to nearly any aspect of speaking and the idea is that the whole group can benefit from the experience or research that each member brings to the meeting. An example that came up in the meeting was "When presenting, stand to the left of your slides since people read left-to-right." After each meeting, we will publish the tips in the email meeting reminder (that is sent out

2) A prepared 8-10 min. Speech. There were some who, for personal scheduling reasons, could not agree to prepare a speech, but the following working titles / speakers have committed to be prepared to speak and be evaluated by the group.
* "Emotional Intelligence" by David Gavin
* "Life Lessons" by Croix Sather
* "How to Negotiate Anything" by Richard Hastings
* "Speaking to Investors" by Paul Tanner
* "Pump It UP! Taking your Marketing materials to the next level" by Dave Wheeler
We may not get to all speeches, but we will be prepared. If you have a speech title and would like to be added to the list of speakers, please reply to this email with your speech title and a brief description.

3) A prepared "role play" situation, preferrably written down so that each participant can read it. This is similar to TableTopics, but it is much more interactive and will help the members think on their feet and react to a changing situation ( i.e. the other person in the "role play").

We are looking forward to another exciting meeting this Thursday, Aug.23rd (see details below) and guests are definitely welcome. If you have your CC or CTM and are interested in becoming a member (or know someone who might be), please reply to this email or attend an upcoming meeting.

Hope to see you there !

Another contest ... outside of Toastmasters!

This post by Guy Kawasaki (one of my favorite authors & bloggers) tells about a Presentation Contest. While this contest is in no way related to the Spring Contests being conducted by Toastmaster, it could be a good opportunity for a Toastmaster to leverage the skills you learned in your club ! If you decide to enter, please let us know how it goes (in our comment section below). Better yet... send us a copy of your presentation so we can give you feedback !

On a related (Contest) topic.... The new Advanced Club in Division A is hosting a [completely un-sanctioned] inter-District speech contest on Thursday April 19th at the Ridgefield Library at 7:15pm. The contest will feature the winners of the International Speech Contest from Div.A and Div.D (if they elect to participate) and Div. G from District 46 (NY/NJ). Everyone is invited and there is no charge. Please let us know if you will be attending by sending an email to theshot92@gmail.com (Dave)!

Hope to see you at the "Battle of The Border" contest event !

Advanced Toastmasters club - Conference call "meeting"

Greetings Advanced Toastmasters !

We had a conference call meeting tonight at 8pm (if you missed it, send Dave Wheeler an email at theshot92@gmail.com and he can send you more info.)

Even though there was a potential "technical difficulty", it never materialized and the call went off without a hitch!

Here is the agenda for we used for the conference call ....
  • Meeting time(s) / location(s)
  • Eligibility (Advanced TM, others?)
  • Charter membership fee ($75/yr)
  • April 19th kickoff event ("Battle of the Border")
  • Goals for the club - what do we want to get out of it?

If you missed the conference call, we will also be having a club meeting at the Ridgefield Library in the History Room next Thursday at 7:15pm. Unless we decide otherwise on the conference call, the next meeting will have at least one target speech that we can all view and then we will discuss "Advanced Evaluations".

Conference Call for Advanced Club.... Thursday, 3/15 at 8pm

Since it may be difficult for some people to make the recent meetings of the Advanced Toastmaster Club we have organized (at the Ridgefield, CT Library), we are going to have an informational conference call for anyone who might be interested in becoming a CHARTER MEMBER of the Div. A Advanced Toastmasters Club.

The conference call service is free but the call-in number is long distance (South Dakota). I'm hoping that many people have either a cell phone or home phone that has free long distance so hopefully this won't be a big problem. We can cover the basics quickly right up front for those that don't want to run up their long distance bill.

If you would like to join in the conference call, please send us an email and we will send you the access code and telephone number !

Dave Wheeler, theshot92@gmail.com

NOTE: Our next meeting will be at the Ridgefield Library in the History Room on Thursday, March 22, 2007 at 7:15 - 8:45pm. We hope you can join us! The theme of this meeting will be "Developing Advanced Evaluation Techniques" and we may even have some target speeches on video.

Open to any advanced Toastmaster or any Toastmaster who will be at least an AC-B by the time we charter this club (i.e. soon). The proposed membership guidelines (click here) will be discussed at this meeting, so please attend or send us your comments via email. Membership is open to Toastmasters in all Divisions in District 53 or even adjacent Districts (assuming they want to travel to Division A for meetings). Click here to see where Division A is located within District 53.

If you miss this meeting...
If you or anyone in the clubs in your area are not able to make this organizational meeting, please have them send me an email expressing their interest. We expect that we will have another meeting in February which will be geared toward planning the meetings for the upcoming 6-12 months. This information is posted on the Div.A blog, http://www.areaa4.blogspot.com/ so check here occasionally for updates.
