Why Toastmasters? Sample Videos
Below are some sample YouTube videos provided by Sherri Rafftery, District 31 Governor 2009-10; Kristen Nicolson, Past Intl. Director for Toastmasters; and Heath Suddleson, Toastmasters Intl.Director from Region 7 2009-11.
If you want to add your own YouTube video for the "Why Toastmasters?" video challenge, be sure to tag the video with D53 (since District 53 is organizing this challenge) and "Why TM" so that your video can be found via a YouTube search.
If you would like your video listed as a favorite on the D53 YouTube Channel, send an email with a link to your video to Dave Wheeler. His email address is theshot92 [at] gmail.com. The email address is listed this way (without the @ symbol) to prevent automatic programs who capture addresses and send spam.
Of course, your video should be "Toastmasters-friendly". If you don't know what that means, ask another Toastmaster or a club officer.
Special Thanks to Sherri, Kristen and Heath for stepping forward and providing these excellent examples !

World Champion 2007 helps District 53 kick off 2008!
Did you miss the 2008 Kickoff event featuring Vikas Jhingran, the 2007 World Champion of Public Speaking?
Vikas had some excellent advice for all Toastmasters and especially anyone who has the opportunity to enter a contest!
- Be Yourself
- Make Your Weaknesses into your Strengths
- and much more.
Did you know that his district-winning speech did not win at the club level the first time? He competed at a second club (obviously improved his speech) and ended up winning the World Championship ! What could you accomplish if you focused on improving your speech and did not give up?
Overall, the kickoff event was a great afternoon / evening and everyone in attendence had a great time !
To Thank Vikas for sharing an afternoon / evening with District 53 Toastmasters, we have created the following "video" (including Nana Danso, D53 Intl. Speech Winner and 2nd Runner-up to Vikas at the 2007 Regional contest, Deb Grehn, former District Governor and the D53 Leadership team).

Conference Call for Advanced Club.... Thursday, 3/15 at 8pm
Since it may be difficult for some people to make the recent meetings of the Advanced Toastmaster Club we have organized (at the Ridgefield, CT Library), we are going to have an informational conference call for anyone who might be interested in becoming a CHARTER MEMBER of the Div. A Advanced Toastmasters Club.
The conference call service is free but the call-in number is long distance (South Dakota). I'm hoping that many people have either a cell phone or home phone that has free long distance so hopefully this won't be a big problem. We can cover the basics quickly right up front for those that don't want to run up their long distance bill.
If you would like to join in the conference call, please send us an email and we will send you the access code and telephone number !
Dave Wheeler, theshot92@gmail.com
NOTE: Our next meeting will be at the Ridgefield Library in the History Room on Thursday, March 22, 2007 at 7:15 - 8:45pm. We hope you can join us! The theme of this meeting will be "Developing Advanced Evaluation Techniques" and we may even have some target speeches on video.

What words do you use ALOT...
Many of us think, with good reason, that Steve Jobs of Apple Computer is a pretty good speaker....
... but this video (click here) shows that even the best of us have certain phrases that we "lean on" quite a bit.
For your next speech, ask your evaluator if you are using a phrase unconsciously that should be eliminated such as "ya know" or "...Anyways..." [for transitions between subjects].
Or, can you work a catchphrase into your speech to build on a central theme? Sort of like... "You must be a Redneck ..." [Comedian Jeff Foxworthy] or "Git R Done" [Comedian, Larry the Cable Guy].
What words are you using?
